Sound Editing

The unglamorous craft that decides whether a session can be finished, handed over, or reopened in a year.

Editing rarely appears in marketing material and constantly appears in real work. It is the difference between a session that can be finished on time and one that becomes an argument.

Dialogue editing gets particular attention because it is unforgiving: the ear notices an inconsistent room tone immediately, even when it cannot say why. Learning to match background across cuts is a practical, teachable skill and it transfers directly to broadcast and film work.

Session organisation is treated as a professional obligation, not a personal preference. A project handed over with meaningful names, sensible track order and consolidated files is a project someone else can pick up — and that is often what gets an engineer hired again.

Curriculum

  1. Editing workflows

    • Non-destructive editing and why it matters
    • Crossfades, timing and comping takes
    • Time and pitch correction, and their limits
    • Keeping edits inaudible
  2. Dialogue editing

    • Cleaning breaths, clicks and handling noise
    • Matching room tone across cuts
    • Noise reduction without artefacts
    • Building a smooth dialogue track from imperfect takes
  3. Session organisation

    • Naming conventions that survive a handover
    • Track order, groups and colour discipline
    • Playlists, memory locations and markers
    • Archiving and file consolidation
  4. Delivery formats

    • File formats, sample rates and bit depths
    • Stems, mixdowns and deliverable sets
    • Metadata and documentation
    • Checking a delivery before it leaves
  5. Practical projects

    • Editing a full multitrack session
    • Preparing a dialogue scene
    • Producing a complete deliverable set
    • Handing a session to another engineer

What you will be able to do

  • Edit cleanly enough that the work is not audible as editing.
  • Turn several imperfect takes into one usable performance.
  • Organise a session that another engineer can open and understand.
  • Prepare and verify a delivery that meets a written specification.

Practical components

A significant part of this module is done on the platform, since editing is exactly the kind of work that can be practised well at home. Sessions are then reviewed for organisation as well as for sound.
